    OK, so here’s the problem I running into. I set the cams exactly as you described, then I positioned the handle at the wheel at 12 o’clock inserted the shuttle at 3 o’clock. When I inserted the bobbin and shut the bobbin cover. Everything is good right? It is picking up the bobbin thread, but it gets in a knot all around the bobbin. I can’t figure this problem out. I’m using a standard needle and thread so it’s not a problem with those two items. I polished the bobbin and shuttle to ensure the thread didn’t tangle due to fish hooks or something else. The timing should be correct. I went step by step to ensure it is. But obviously something is off. Any ideas??

    Thanks for a really well done video reviewing The Lost Ways. Particularly the pros and cons of this book. Agreed, if you spent the time, and one would spend months just to go out and gather the info, and money to print it one’s own book would cost a great deal more. Also, lost, as in the title, does not mean unknown by anyone. Many of these topics were taught to me by my father and grandfather…..back in the 1960’s and 70’s. I am now 64 years old and no longer recall much of the particulars. Great to have it in one book!

    Paper only has strength when dry this is because of hydrogen bonding. As soon as you wet the paper or cardboard the hydrogen bonds all along the fibres break because water is polar and the water breaks the Hydrogen bonds. It could be interesting to try making a hat etc by placing randomly oriented hemp fibres over a shape and let them dry and the hydrogen bonds to form then fix them in a flexible nonpolar resin like silicone resin. It would be waterproof and strong but would not breathe like fur felt but it could make a great reinforced silicone mould. Silicone usually has low tensile strength so it could make a useful composite material

    Great Video, I loved it. But I have a unique issue I hope you can help me with...or someone can help me with. I am having an issue with the needle striking my feed foot only when feeding in (away from me) or feeding out (toward me) feeding right or left the needle runs in the middle of the opening in the feed foot. If I adjust the food to have the needle centered in the foot and the foot centered on the pass hole for the needle when feeding in it works in every position but feeding out then the outside of the foot covers the through hole and get needle strike with the foot. Any ideas on how to correct this issue?

    I HAD THAT SAME PROBLEM YOUR INSTRUCTIONS STILL DID NIT WORK-- SO I ROTATED THE BOBBIN HOLDER WITH THAT TOOTH ON IT CLOCKWISE SO THAT HOOK WAS PAST THE NEEDLE SO NOW WHEN THE BOBBIB HOLDER SPINS PAST THE NEEDLE IT GRABS THE THREAD EVERY G D TIME. Rotate no in holder hook at about 10:00 or just past or clockwise past the needle and that hook will pull up your bobbin thread every time. ITS ALL ABOUT THE HOOK ON THE BOBBIN HOLDER- Period

    I just wanted to say thank you so much for taking the time to make this. I watched this once waiting for it to arrive, and a second time to actually reassemble it and make sure I didn't miss anything (I did). It's hard to describe how big of an impact a proper cleaning and greasing can make. This went from a crunchy, sticky, barely functioning machine - practically speaking it would be unusable, to something that operates buttery smooth and feels like a robust machine made before planned obsolescence. Like I just found a treasure in a thrift shop. I never would have been able to get this back together, or even have had the confidence to take this apart if not for this video and I'm extremely thankful for it. To anyone considering doing this, or on the fence, if you've already got a dremel and some spare elbow grease this is definitely worth it! Other than saving a lot of money, the hidden benefit of DIYing this machine vs buying a far more expensive machine is that you also end up learning how every piece of it works as you put it back together - so maintenance in the future will be a lot less daunting and quicker. Again, thank you so much!

    Thanks to Harrison, Mine is up and running as advertised. As a retired tool and cutter grinder, I am very familiar with oil ports on machine tools. One that got missed in this video is the small brass colored screw that is between the two rocker arm oiling ports. Unscrew it and put a drop or two in there to lube the shank of the bolt that runs thruthe frame and connects both rocker arms. That bolt has no bearing, so there is direct contact with the hole. On mine, the bolt does not rotate with the rockers, but I don't want it to corrode due to dis-similar metals in contact. When in doubt: Apply Oil

    Thanks for free tutorials and Q&As. I'm having issues with my machine. The upper thread goes under the bobbin-well (bobbin-axis? on the market) and gets entangled around the gear where the rod runs on. I have no idea what to do to stop this from happening. I'd appreciate very much if anyone could help. I'm also having the absurdly high thread tension to the point I can snap a thread by just tugging it to the needle. I'm polishing everywhere like mad to fix this issue as I speak. (I don't think my machine was built right. I had to remove one of two pressure foot springs not to pole holes in the leather, too.)

    • @BillWilliamsonParody-cy5dg
      @BillWilliamsonParody-cy5dg Місяць тому

      I'm still struggling with this machine but I made some progress. The right kind of thread makes an enormous difference. The thread I just got is a bonding thread? It's coated, apparently. Without this, I can do nothing. The mono filament thread the machine came with has been nothing but a curse to me. When you doubt, change thread & needle. I also polished everywhere the thread touches. I mean everywhere. The build quality of this machine is a nightmare and every corner was tearing the thread little by little. Also the spring on the bobbin shuttle has the tendency to pinch the thread instead of just pressing it. That pinching occurs when I use the holes further from the spring's screw & the spring is touching the wall. I decided to have some distance between the spring and the wall, so I can sew. Over all, this machine is way too finicky for me to handle. Maybe I got a lemon of a machine. I don't know. I suppose to pay like 5 grands for this sort of machine, so I can't complain too much, perhaps... This machine tests you. Whoever still here please with me luck.

  • @BillWilliamsonParody-cy5dg
    @BillWilliamsonParody-cy5dg Місяць тому

    Hello. I just got a CLSP. I did everything but the upper thread keeps getting under the bobbin instead of picking the lower thread up. Maybe the thread leaping is too right. I keep the nut as loose as possible but I swear I can cycle the machine by tugging the upper thread before it snaps rather than be pulled out a bit more; because it's so tight. Is this normal? I don't think it is... I might blow a couple hundred bucks to solve this issue at some repair shop.

    • @BillWilliamsonParody-cy5dg
      @BillWilliamsonParody-cy5dg Місяць тому

      The upper thread goes nowhere but under the bobbin; around the gear. The bobbin thread does not move in the meantime. I tested multiple thickness of threads. This machine is way above my pay-grade.

    New to CLSP and your channel but love your concise narrations. For springs, I suggest getting 12 inches of heavy thread, stick it through the end of the spring, fold thread in half and pull up on the string to stretch the spring onto its post (biker trick). Also, while apart, get a cheap tap set with the 4 smallest metric threads ($5) and run all threads on all parts. Experience has taught me that when a Chinese manufacture uses the same taps 50,000 times, the threads they cut are BAD. My bobbin cover screw came with damaged threads and the hole had no clean threads. Tapped it out, got a longer screw, put in a drill and reduced the screw head diameter and taper to make it more counter-sunk and smoother on top. Also used bright heat shrink tubing on foot lift lever and sewing head swivel ears. Easy to see and gives them a rubber-like coating.
